Melon Mashers Roll Past Charlotte Green Sox 12-2 Behind Mertz’s Four-RBI Performance

CLIMAX, N.C. — The Mid-State Melon Mashers put together one of their most complete performances of the season Thursday night, collecting 16 hits and receiving a dominant outing on the mound from Camden Winfree in a convincing 12-2 victory over the Charlotte Green Sox at Providence Grove High School.

Leading the offensive attack was David Mertz, who drove in four runs on two hits. Mertz delivered an RBI single in the first inning before launching a two-run home run to center field in the third, helping the Mashers build an early lead they would never relinquish.

The Mashers wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. After stringing together a pair of singles in the bottom of the first inning, Jordan Turner brought home the game’s first run with an RBI single. The offense continued to roll in the second when Ashton Hooker lined a single to left field to extend the advantage to 4-0.

Mid-State broke the game open in the third inning, plating four more runs on five hits. Turner added another RBI single, Mertz’s two-run homer highlighted the rally, and the Mashers continued to apply pressure throughout the inning to push the lead to 8-0.

On the mound, Camden Winfree turned in a stellar performance. The right-hander earned the victory after allowing just one run on three hits over five innings. Winfree struck out eight batters while issuing only one walk, keeping Charlotte’s offense off balance throughout his outing.

Preston Williams was equally effective in relief, tossing a scoreless inning while allowing just one hit and recording a strikeout.

The Melon Mashers’ lineup produced contributions from top to bottom. JJ Faulkner led the team with three hits in three at-bats, while Myles Odom, Thompson Holloway, Jordan Turner, and AJ Bullock each recorded multiple-hit performances. Faulkner also swiped two bases as the Mashers totaled five stolen bases on the night.

Defensively, Mid-State played a flawless game, committing no errors. Turner led the defensive effort with eight chances in the field.

Charlotte’s offense was paced by Ty Goodson, who collected two hits from the leadoff spot. JB Walters drove in one of the Green Sox’s two runs.

With the win, the Melon Mashers continue to build momentum heading into their upcoming matchup against the Lake Norman Harbor Hippos. The combination of timely hitting, aggressive baserunning, strong pitching, and error-free defense showcased the balanced style of baseball that has become a hallmark of the Mashers this season.
