Melon Mashers Rally Past Green Sox for 21-12 Victory
MISENHEIMER, N.C. — The Mid-State Melon Mashers showed resilience and offensive firepower Thursday night, erasing a six-run deficit and exploding for 21 runs in a thrilling 21-12 victory over the Charlotte Green Sox at Pfeiffer University.
The Mashers collected 15 hits and drew 12 walks in a game that featured multiple momentum swings before Mid-State pulled away late.
The Mashers struck first in the opening inning when Sebastian Rodriguez singled to center field and both Ethan Willard and Colin Duvall reached and scored, helping Mid-State grab an early 3-0 lead.
Charlotte battled back to tie the game in the bottom of the first before the Mashers reclaimed the advantage in the second. Zack Scruggs delivered an RBI single to put Mid-State ahead 4-3.
The Green Sox responded with a seven-run second inning to seize a 10-4 lead, putting the Mashers in an early hole. Rather than folding, Mid-State chipped away at the deficit. In the fourth inning, Myles Odom ripped a bases-clearing double that plated three runs and helped trim the lead to 11-10.
After Charlotte tied the game at 11-11 in the fifth, the Mashers took control for good in the seventh. AJ Bullock sparked the rally with a single, while Ashton Hooker and Zack Scruggs each drove in runs to give Mid-State a 14-11 advantage.
The Mashers put the game out of reach with a seven-run eighth inning. Cole Moebius drove in a run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Duvall added an RBI walk, Hooker collected an RBI single, Scruggs worked another run-scoring walk, and Christian Gentrup capped the inning with a two-run single.
On the mound, Elijah Prince earned the victory in relief. Prince worked four innings, allowing six runs—none earned—while striking out two. Preston Williams followed with three solid innings, surrendering just one run on two hits. Weston Reeder got the start for the Mashers.
Offensively, Odom led the way with three RBIs. Maddox Perez paced the Mashers with three hits, while Gentrup and Jordan Stucki each recorded multiple-hit performances. Willard showed patience at the plate, drawing three walks, and Hooker added pressure on the bases with two stolen bases.
Charlotte finished with nine hits on the night, but the Mashers’ relentless offense and disciplined approach at the plate proved to be the difference as Mid-State completed the comeback victory.
The win improves momentum for the Mashers as they continue their summer schedule and showcased the club’s ability to battle through adversity and finish strong.
