Andrew Thomas Leads Melon Mashers Past Charlotte Green Sox, 11-7
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Andrew Thomas turned in a standout performance at the plate Wednesday night, collecting three hits and scoring three runs as the Melon Mashers Baseball 18O defeated the Charlotte Green Sox, 11-7, at Stick Williams Dream Fields.
Thomas went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three stolen bases, reaching base throughout the evening and helping spark an offense that produced 11 runs on nine hits.
The Melon Mashers wasted no time taking control of the game. A five-run first inning provided an early cushion as Myles Odom, David Mertz, and Ashton Hooker each drew bases-loaded walks to force in runs before Zack Scruggs delivered a two-run single to cap the rally.
Melon Mashers continued to pressure the Green Sox throughout the game, using patience at the plate to draw seven walks and consistently put runners in scoring position.
Hooker delivered one of the game’s biggest extra-base hits, finishing 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Scruggs and Santiago Rodriguez each drove in two runs, while Jordan Turner and Hooker added RBIs of their own.
Thomas paced the offense with three hits, while Hooker, Odom, Michael Perez, Rodriguez, Scruggs, and Thompson Holloway each contributed a hit. The Mashers also displayed aggressive baserunning, with Thomas swiping three bags and Holloway adding another stolen base.
Pitching Staff Combines for Victory
The Melon Mashers used five pitchers to secure the win.
Carter Catlett IV earned the victory after throwing two scoreless innings in relief. Catlett allowed just one hit while striking out one and not issuing a walk.
Connor Adams got the start and was effective over three innings, surrendering only one run (unearned) on four hits while striking out one. Parker Williams followed with two scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out one.
Ethan Prince worked the eighth inning, and Tyler Holloway closed out the game despite a late Green Sox rally in the ninth.
As a staff, Melon Mashers pitchers combined to allow eight hits while striking out five.
Green Sox Rally Falls Short
Charlotte mounted a late comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth, scoring five runs to cut into the deficit.
A three-run double by the Green Sox No. 5 hitter highlighted the inning. The Green Sox also received an RBI triple from their No. 13 hitter and an RBI groundout from their No. 4 hitter, but the rally came too late to overcome the Mashers’ early offensive explosion.
